Italian Authorities Expose Polish Ham Scam
Two Polish citizens were recently arrested near Naples, southern Italy, after the authorities discovered an underground workshop where the suspects packed the ham originating in Poland using counterfeit labels bearing Italian ham brand names including Parma ham, the EU-protected designation of origin (Prosciutto di Parma).
The suspects were charged with food fraud and violation of public health and safety regulations related to food manufacturing and distribution. The police are trying to identify the distribution channels for the mislabelled ham.
According to the Italian fraud squad (N.A.S.), the total value of the fake meat seized in Italy in 2014 was estimated at EUR 143.7 million (USD 158 million).
