Romanian Customs Seize EUR 2 M Worth of Counterfeits

In the period April 18 — May 9, the Romanian customs officials seized 93,391 items believed to be counterfeit, the total value of which exceeds EUR 2 million (USD 2.6 million).

The seized goods include:

• 33,026 sportswear items and 1,038 sneakers bearing Adidas, Diesel, Gucci, Chanel, Armani, Burberry, Louis Vuitton, and Dolce & Gabbana marks;
• 21,596 plastic toys bearing the Angry Birds and My Little Pony marks;
• 9,540 toy sets bearing Disney, Scrabble, My Little Pony and Thomas & Friends marks;
• 9,159 toys and balls bearing Disney, Cars, Thomas & Friends, Barcelona, Liverpool, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Chelsea, Manchester United, FIFA Brazil 2014 marks;
• 7,050 pairs of children’s shoes bearing the Dora the Explorer mark;
• 3,800 plastic toys bearing Disney and Hello Kitty marks;
• 2,390 posture support braces and 400 magnetic braces bearing Drx Levine’s mark;
• 732 sets of plastic toys and 239 electronic organs bearing Snoopy, Disney, Hello Kitty and Lego marks;
• 718 children’s metal beds bearing the Disney mark;
• 417 suitcases and 417 travel bags bearing the Route 66 mark;
• 450 purses bearing the Versace and Burberry marks;
• 450 ladies’ wallets bearing Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Chanel marks;
• 235 manicure kits bearing the Burberry mark;
• 504 toy car sets and 720 plastic toys bearing the Disney mark; and
• 510 blankets bearing the Hello Kitty mark.

The seizures were made at the port of Constanta, eastern Romania, and the port of Bechet, southern Romania. The goods originated in China and were intended for the Romanian market.

On a similar note, an exhibition of counterfeit goods was recently organized at the Bucharest Palace of Justice to mark the World Intellectual Property Day.
According to the official statistics presented during the exhibition, the number of counterfeit goods seized at the Romanian borders in 2012 was lower than the number in 2011.

In 2012, approximately 137,000 clothing and lingerie items, 41,000 cosmetics and perfumery products and 53,000 pairs of shoes were seized. In 2011, approximately 506,000 cosmetics items, 105,000 perfumery items and 146,000 pairs of shoes were seized.
