Macedonian Customs Seize and Destroy Counterfeit Apparel, Footwear

During regular controls at Macedonia’s border crossings in the period December 17 – January 20, the customs officials seized a considerable quantity of goods bearing well-known brand names, believed to be counterfeit.

In the week of December 17-23, the Macedonian customs officials seized 349 blouses bearing the marks of Adidas and Polo, while in the week of December 24-30, the officials seized 380 pieces of underwear and socks bearing the marks of Adidas, Puma, Nike and D&G, 80 sports bags bearing the mark of Coca Cola, and 4,400 spare car parts bearing the mark of Zastava.

In the week of January 7-13, the customs officials seized 410 women’s tops bearing the mark of Apple and 313 mobile phone spare parts bearing the marks of Apple, Samsung and Nokia, while during the period January 14-20, the officials seized 120 pairs of sneakers bearing the mark of Nike, 261 pairs of tracksuits bearing the marks of Adidas, Nike and Puma, and 17,280 razors bearing the mark of Max 3.

The goods, which were found in vehicles with Macedonian and Turkish license plates, originated in China, Turkey and Dubai, and were intended for the Macedonian and Kosovo markets.

Moreover, on December 20, 2012, the customs authorities organized the destruction of counterfeit goods, most of which were seized in 2012. A total of 16,829 pieces of textile articles, 13,638 pieces of footwear, 3,934 auto spare parts, and 1,344 mobile phone accessories were destroyed. The destroyed goods bore the marks of Zara, Nike, Adidas, D&G, Lacoste, Puma, Burberry and others. The goods were destroyed at a plant in Kavadarci, southern Macedonia, in the presence of brand representatives.
