Latvia Ratifies UPC Agreement

Feb 1 2018 - 11:48

On January 11, 2018, Latvia deposited its instrument of ratification of the Unified Patent Court Agreement (UPCA) with the Council of the EU, becoming the 15th country to have ratified the UPCA.

The UPCA was signed in Brussels on February 19, 2013. The UPC will be a court common to the contracting states and thus part of their judicial system. It will have exclusive competence with regard to European patents and European patents with unitary effect.

The UPC Agreement enters into force on the first day of the fourth month after France, Germany, the United Kingdom and at least 10 other EU member states have deposited their instrument of ratification. Because France ratified the Agreement back in 2014, the UPCA now only needs the UK and Germany’s ratification to enter into force.
