Georgia Becomes EPO Validation State

The validation agreement between Georgia and the European Patent Organization (EPO) entered into force on 15 January 2024, making Georgia a validation state for European patents.

Although Georgia is not a contracting state to the European Patent Convention (EPC), the agreement enables the validation of European patents in the country, which will then have the same legal effect as Georgian patents. The validation procedure and the effect of validated patents in Georgia are regulated by the patent law amendments which entered into force in Georgia on 2 June 2023.

To validate a European patent in Georgia, applicants need to designate Georgia as a validation state when filing their direct European or Euro-PCT applications after 15 January 2024 and pay a EUR 200 validation fee. They also need to submit a Georgian translation of the specification within three months of grant.
